Description
Offered is a dated 1857 handbill or small broadside announcing the performance of the operaDaughter of
the
Regiment
for the first time in Columbus, Ohio. This bel canto opera, by Gaetano Donizetti, premiered in 1840. It is a comedy which employs slapstick antics. Pavarotti performed it at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972. The handbill also announces, in large and bold typeface, that the performance will conclude with an historical allegory of Washington, with Miss Liberty playing a part and the Star Spangled Banner sung. The handbill features a wide variety of typefaces evocative of the 1850’s. The bottom shows it was printed by Capital City Fact Job Rooms. Although there are several U.S. cities named Columbus, the city in Ohio is the only one which is “the capital city”. In addition, we have found one book relating to a Columbus, Ohio business which used this printer. The back is blank except that the print from the front is visible.
It is printed on thin, almost tissue-like, paper stock.
Size: 6" X 8"
Condition: There is an approximately one half inch tear at in the unprinted section of the bottom edge. There is a small tear in the white of the upper right corner. There is some fraying along all edges consistent with age. The top is likely trimmed slightly as there is evidence of a border line which is interrupted (missing) on part of the upper edge.
